Shrink Like Ant Man in Film With After Effects

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create the Ant Man shrinking effect using Adobe After Effects. Follow these steps to achieve this impressive visual effect.

**Step 1: Prepare Your Footage**
Record your video with some movement in the background to make the effect more realistic. Import your footage into Adobe After Effects and create a new composition.

**Step 2: Use the Roto Brush Tool**
  1. Select your footage layer and double-click it to open it in the Layer panel.
  2. Choose the **Roto Brush Tool** from the toolbar.
  3. Brush over yourself to isolate your character. Adjust the brush size as needed for accuracy.
  4. Refine the edges using the **Refine Edge Tool** if necessary.
  5. Go through the entire shot to ensure the mask is consistent and accurate.

**Step 3: Pre-compose the Rotoscoped Layer**
  1. With the rotoscoped layer selected, go to **Layer** > **Pre-compose**.
  2. Choose **Move all attributes into the new composition** and rename it to "Roto".

**Step 4: Adjust Position and Scale**
  1. In the main composition, isolate the "Roto" layer by turning off the visibility of other layers.
  2. Select the "Roto" layer and press **P** to bring up the Position property. Set keyframes to move your character as needed.
  3. Press **S** to bring up the Scale property. Set keyframes to gradually scale down your character over time.
  4. Enable **Motion Blur** for the "Roto" layer to make the scaling down movement look more natural.

**Step 5: Add Smoke Effect**
  1. Import a simple smoke layer, which you can get from Action VFX or any other source.
  2. Position the smoke layer below the "Roto" layer in the timeline.
  3. Scale and position the smoke to match the shrinking effect, making it look like a burst of smoke as your character shrinks.

**Step 6: Color Correction and Final Adjustments**
  1. Adjust the colors, resolution, and blur of your footage to blend the effect seamlessly with the background.
  2. Use color correction tools such as **Curves**, **Hue/Saturation**, and **Levels** to match the overall look of the scene.

**Step 7: Render and Export**
Once you are satisfied with the effect, render and export your composition. Go to **Composition** > **Add to Render Queue** and choose the appropriate settings for your final output.
