Creating an Epic Glitch Mask Effect Using After Effects

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create an epic glitch mask effect using Adobe After Effects. Follow these steps to achieve this dynamic visual effect.

**Step 1: Prepare Your Footage**
Download the footage provided in the tutorial or use your own. Import your footage into Adobe After Effects and create a new composition.

**Step 2: Rotoscope Yourself Out**
  1. Duplicate your footage layer by selecting it and pressing **Ctrl+D** (Windows) or **Cmd+D** (Mac).
  2. Select the duplicated layer and go to the **Roto Brush Tool** in the toolbar.
  3. Double-click the layer to open it in the layer panel. Use the Roto Brush Tool to draw over yourself, defining the area to be masked out.
  4. Adjust the size of the Roto Brush Tool to accurately mask out smaller details and edges.
  5. Review the entire shot frame-by-frame to ensure that you have perfectly masked out the subject.

**Step 3: Refine the Edge**
  1. After rotoscoping, use the **Refine Edge Tool** to smooth the edges of the mask.
  2. Adjust the settings in the **Effect Controls** panel to further refine the mask edges and remove any unwanted artifacts.

**Step 4: Apply the Glitch Effect**
  1. With the masked layer selected, go to **Effect** > **Stylize** > **Motion Tile**. Increase the **Output Width** and **Output Height** to create more space for the glitch effect.
  2. Apply the **Displacement Map** effect by going to **Effect** > **Distort** > **Displacement Map**. Choose the same layer as the displacement map layer.
  3. Adjust the **Horizontal Displacement** and **Vertical Displacement** settings to create the desired glitch effect.

**Step 5: Customize the Glitch Effect**
Customize the glitch effect by adding additional effects such as **CC Scale Wipe**, **Color Correction**, and **Noise**. Experiment with different settings to achieve a unique look.

**Step 6: Composite the Glitch Effect**
  1. Composite the glitch effect back into the original footage by placing the masked layer with the glitch effect on top of the original layer.
  2. Use blending modes such as **Add** or **Screen** to seamlessly integrate the glitch effect with the original footage.

**Step 7: Final Adjustments and Render**
Make final adjustments to the timing, opacity, and effects to ensure the glitch mask effect looks seamless and dynamic. Once satisfied, render and export your composition.
